Health Benefit In Fasting

August 19th, 2010 -- Posted in Health, The Medical Plus | No Comments »

Fasting the act of willingly abstaining from food, drink, sexual intercourse for a period of time. No doubt, fasting has health and spiritual benefits, but we must never lose sight of the main goal of fasting, the  spiritual meaning of the Fasting which includes:

  • It teaches man the principle of sincere Love: because when he observes Fasting he does it out of deep love for God. And the man who loves God truly is a man who really knows what love is.
  • It equips man with a creative sense of hope and an optimistic outlook on life; because when he fasts he is hoping to please God and is seeking His Grace.
  • It imbues in man the genuine virtue of effective devotion, honest dedication and closeness to God; because when he fasts he does so for God and for His sake alone.
  • It cultivates in man a vigilant and sound conscience; because the fasting person keeps his fast in secret as well as in public. In fasting, especially, there is no mundane authority to check man’s behavior or compel him to observe fasting. He keeps it to please God and satisfy his own conscience by being faithful in secret and in public. There is no better way to cultivate a sound conscience in man.

Health Benefit In Fasting

During Fasting, daily diet should not differ greatly from normal and should be as simple as possible. We should be able to maintain our normal weight, neither losing nor gaining. However, if one is over-weight, fasting is an ideal practice to lose weight. We should aim to consume slow digesting foods including fiber-containing foods. Slow-digesting foods last up to 8 hours, while fast-digesting foods last only 3 to 4 hours. Slow-digesting foods are foods that contain grains and seeds like barley, wheat, oats, semolina, beans, lentils, whole meal flour, etc. (complex carbohydrates).

Fast-burning foods are foods that contain sugar, white flour, etc. ie refined carbohydrates.

Fibre-containing foods are bran-containing foods, whole wheat, grains, seeds, vegetables like green beans, peas, sem (papry), marrow, mealies, spinach, methie, fruit with skin, dried fruit especially dried apricots, figs and prunes, almonds, etc. Meals should be well-balanced, containing foods from each food group, i.e. fruits, vegetables, meat/chicken/fish, bread/cereals and dairy products. Fried foods should be limited. They cause indigestion, heart-burn, and weight problems.

During Fasting the following food should be avoided

  1. Fried and fatty foods.
  2. Foods containing too much sugar.
  3. Over-eating .
  4. Smoking cigarettes. If you cannot give up, cut down gradually starting a few weeks before fasting.

What you can eat

  1. Complex carbohydrates at the night before so that the food lasts longer.
  2. Haleem is an excellent source of protein and is a slow-burning food.
  3. Dates are excellent source of sugar, fibre, carbohydrates, potassium & magnesium.
  4. Almonds are rich in protein and fibre with less fat.
  5. Bananas are a good source of potassium, magnesium and carbohydrates.
  6. You should drink as much water or fruit juices as possible between the period of breaking the fast and bedtime so that your body may adjust fluid levels in time.

Problems to avoid during Fasting

  • Constipation

Constipation can cause piles (haemorroids), fissures (cracks in anal canal) and indigestion, with a bloated feeling. Causes: Too much refined foods, too little water and not enough fibre in the diet.

Remedy: Avoid refined foods, increase water intake, use bran in baking, brown flour when making roti.

  • Indigestion and Wind

Causes: Over-eating. Excessive fried and fatty foods, spicy foods, and foods that produce wind e.g. eggs, cabbage, lentils, fizzy drinks like Cola also produce gas.

Remedy: Do not over-eat, drink fruit juices or water. Avoid fried foods, add ajmor to wind-producing foods.

  • Lethargy (Low blood pressure)

Excessive sweating, weakness, tiredness, lack of energy, dizziness, especially on getting up from sitting, paleness and feeling faint are symptoms associated with “low blood pressure”. This tends to occur towards the afternoon.

Causes: Too little fluid intake, decreased salt intake.

Remedy: Keep cool, increase fluid and salt intake.

Caution: Low blood pressure should be confirmed by taking a blood pressure reading when symptoms are present. Persons with high blood pressure may need their medication adjusted during Ramadan. They should consult their doctor.

  • Headache

Causes: Caffeine and tobacco-withdrawal, too much exercise, lack of sleep, hunger usually occur during the day and worsen towards the evening. When associated with “low blood pressure”, the headache can be quite severe and can also cause nausea before breaking the fast.

Remedy: Cut down caffeine and tobacco slowly starting a week or two before fasting. Herbal and caffeine-free teas may be substituted. Reorganize your schedule during fasting so as to have adequate sleep.

  • Low Blood Sugar

Weakness, dizziness, tiredness, poor concentration, perspiring easily, feeling shaky (tremor), headache, and palpitations are symptoms of low blood sugar.

Causes in non-diabetics: Excessive sugar consumption i.e. refined carbohydrates. The body produces too much insulin causing the blood glucose to drop.

Remedy: Limit sugar-containing foods and drinks.

Caution: Diabetics may need to adjust their medication when fasting, consult your doctor.

  • Muscle Cramps

Causes: Inadequate intake of calcium, magnesium and potassium foods.

Remedy: Eat foods rich in these minerals e.g. vegetables, fruit, dairy products, meat and dates.

Caution: Those on high blood pressure medication and with kidney stone problems should consult their doctor.

  • Peptic ulcers, Heart burn and Gastritis

Increased acid levels in an empty stomach aggravate the above conditions. It causes a burning feeling in the stomach area and can extend up to the throat. Spicy foods, coffee, and Cola drinks worsen these conditions.

Medications are available to control acid levels in the stomach. People with proven peptic ulcers and hiatus hernia should consult their doctor well before fasting.

  • Kidney Stones

Kidney stones may occur in people who have less liquids to drink. Therefore, it is essential to drink extra liquids so as to prevent stone formation.

Is it safe to do exercise while pregnant?

August 9th, 2010 -- Posted in The Medical Plus | No Comments »

There are a lot of myths about pregnancy and exercising. Pioneers such as James Clapp., M.D. and Elizabeth Noble have proven that exercising actually makes easier pregnancy and delivery. In the past it was believed that pregnant women should spend nine months prone on the couch, resting comfortably. Doctors feared that the jarring motion of aerobics or running could damage the fetus, and prescribed rest for even the most intense of professional athletes.

Regular exercise can help you to cope with the physical and mental demands of being pregnant, and prepare you for the rigours of labour. All those pregnancy niggles, such as back ache, constipation and fatigue, will be easier to keep at bay. Walking, jogging, swimming and aquanatal classes, and cycling on an exercise bike are all considered good, safe forms of exercise, as long as you don’t overdo them. Yoga and Pilates are also ideal, as long as you find a registered, qualified teacher who is experienced in dealing with pregnant women.

Amount of exercise that a pregnant woman should do depends on whether or not she was physically active before pregnancy. The women who were not active and did not work out should work at a slower fitness level than women who was very active before pregnancy. ALL women should see their doctor before exercising during pregnancy; you might have an incompetent cervix or be having multiple children, both of which are good causes for you NOT to exercise, or at the very least limit the physical strain you exert on your self. If you were physically active before your pregnancy, you should be able to continue your activity in moderation. Don’t try to exercise at your former level; instead, do what’s most comfortable for you now.

You should take some precautions before you do exercise, exercise may be beneficial for you but some women should not do exercise. Pregnant Women with complication or with serious medical problems should not do excerise without their doctors consultation, that is why it is important to consult your doctor before attempting any exercise program.

* Don’t do any type of contact sports. Such as soccer and football.

* Eat before and after your workout. Eat food with carbohydrates such as fruits. Glucose is important for your baby. The purpose of exercise should be fitness, not to lose weight.

* Drink plenty of water. Avoid caffeinated beverages. If you become dehydrated, it may effect you and your baby. Dehydration can cause you to go into premature labor.

* Monitor you heartbeat. It should not exceed 140 beats per minute or make sure you are able to talk normally during your exercise routine.

* Exercise at least 3 times a week. Off and on, exercise is not advisable. Stick to your exercise routine.

* Before and after exercise, be sure to cool down. Stretch all your major muscles before concluding your workout.

* After you deliver, gradually start exercising again.

Exercises that Should Be Avoided During Pregnancy includes:

  • Exercises that holding your breath during the activity should be avoided.
  • Activities where falling is likely such as skiing and horseback riding should be avoided.

  • Activities that require extensive jumping, hopping, skipping, bouncing, or running.
  • Deep knee bends, full sit-ups, double leg raises, and straight-leg toe touches.
  • Bouncing while stretching.
  • Waist-twisting movements while standing.
  • Heavy exercise spurts followed by long periods of no activity.
  • Exercise in hot, humid weather.

Things to Remember While Exercising

• Drink lots of water, you need to make sure you stay cool and hydrated. Studies show that having a high core body temperature at the beginning of a pregnancy cause birth defects and dehydration later in the pregnancy can cause premature births.

• Wear light clothes that will absorb your sweat. When wearing tennis shoes or running shoes make sure that they have high supported backs to help you avoid foot or Achilles heel injuries. Your bras should be very supportive.

• Stop exercising immediately if you experience severe chest pains, vaginal bleeding or if your water breaks. Call or go to you doctor immediately so as to avoid any infections that could harm you and your baby.

• Stop using exercises where you lie on your back after the first trimester, or when you begin to feel dizzy or nauseous.

• Include a warm and a cool down when you exercise and stretch after you do.

• Avoid contact sports (football, hockey, base ball, etc), adventure sports ( rafting, scuba diving etc.) and any sports that might cause trauma like horse back riding or down-hill skiing.

• And, of course, remember that eating a well balanced diet will help you and your baby remain healthy and fit.

Given this situation, many health companies promising quick wellness products have cropped up and through aggressive marketing have managed to make an impact on people. They have come out with many innovative products that rely on the concept of holistic healing and that has struck a chord among customers. Not many of us want to gulp down antibiotics or other allopathic medicines on a sustained basis since we are aware of the dangerous side effects. Other alternatives like herbal medicine, homeopathy have also been tried by many people with inconsistent results.

So when a company like CieAura decides to launch its products in the health and wellness category making use of a unique delivery system, then it is natural that it would attract a lot of attention among people. This company uses transparent chips made of holographic material and works on the concept that a healthy body is the result of positive external vibrations.

CieAura has products that are branded as Rest Quiet, Pure Energy Plus and Pure Relief. Individuals seeking relief from stress, want good sleep and vitality make use of these chips or patches through which they seek to attract and achieve positive vibrations. The net result is that they are able to enjoy freedom from stress and insomnia.

CieAura relies on direct selling and rewards its distributors depending on how many more people they are able to bring in to the network. The company charges a very nominal entry fee and an individual can get bonuses and other rewards from the company by building a good network of people who will promote these products.

As a business opportunity, the prospects are good considering the entry point is low and if one is comfortable  approaching and talking to a large number of people. The product itself is said to be based on a concept tested over 3000 years back and is similar to having a course of acupuncture but without any needles being poked into the body. The adhesive patches that are stuck on vital areas of the body do the job of stimulating micro-vibrations and through that pain relief. CieAura is therefore having a wonderful product and is offering a lucrative opportunity for those interested in making money.

Typhoid fever

December 13th, 2009 -- Posted in The Medical Plus | No Comments »
Typhoid fever is an infectious feverish disease, it is a bacterial infection usually caused by salmonella typhii though UK experts prefer the name Salmonella enteritica serovar Typhi, but the US call it Salmonella typhi.
Classic typhoid fever is a serious disease and could life-threatening, but  antibiotics are effective treatment. Typhoid infection includes drowsiness, headache, fever (onset of fever is slow and rises in stepladder mode), and slow pulse as compared to the rise in temperature.
Untreated typhoid may also result in meningitis, an acute infection of the meninges of the brain. The symptoms presented in such complication are the characteristic combination of fever, headache and stiffness in neck.
Typhoid fever is transmitted from human to human via food or drinking water, and it’s therefore mainly hygiene and sanitary conditions that determine its spread.
causes typhoid fever
Typhoid fever is caused by the Salmonella typhi bacteria, which  spreads through contaminated food, drink, or water. After the ingestion of contaminated food or drink, the Salmonella bacteria invade the small intestine and enter the bloodstream temporarily.
The bacteria are carried by white blood cells in the liver, spleen, and bone marrow. The bacteria then multiply in the cells of these organs and reenter the bloodstream. Patients develop symptoms, including fever, when the organism reenters the bloodstream. Bacteria invade the gallbladder, biliary system, and the lymphatic tissue of the bowel. Here, they multiply in high numbers.
The bacteria pass into the intestinal tract and can be identified for diagnosis in cultures from the stool tested in the laboratory. Stool cultures are sensitive in the early and late stages of the disease but often need to be supplemented with blood cultures to make the definite diagnosis.
Someone who has typhoid fever is most contagious during the first week of the illness. The patient should therefore be isolated during this time, if possible. As well as a person with the disease being infectious, typhoid can also be caught from a carrier. A carrier is someone who still has typhoid bacteria in their system after they have recovered from the disease.

How To Find The Best Deals Of Diet Pills

October 6th, 2009 -- Posted in The Medical Plus | No Comments »
There are plenty of offers permeating the Internet, with manufacturers promising incredible, money saving deals. But by looking a little closer we can often see that these deals are not so amazing after all. If you are looking for discounts on the best diet pills on the market, you have to pay attention to some of the language that is used on the sales pages. Knowing what to look for, and what to avoid, will always be your best ally when looking into consumer deals.
The first thing to look out for are the money back guarantees. Make sure to read the fine print, as sometimes these fail to tell you that they will not return the money if you have opened the product. You should also make sure that the amount of time allotted for return is at least twice more than when the product is supposed to be showing results.
Second, keep track of how much the product costs elsewhere. If you go to a site that offers the best diet pills for half price ($69.99), but you go to another online shop and see the same amount offered there for the same price, then you know it isn’t really an offer. This also counts if one offers cheaper shipping, as often the S&H on the official site will be higher than secondary sources.
Third, watch out for Buy-1-Get-1 deals. Again, check out other sellers to see what they are selling. If it is asking for the same price on the secondary seller for the same amount of diet pills as the original site, then it isn’t any more a deal than the second example.
