Why Divorce Can Be Bad for Your Health

Researchers found that people who had a disruption of marriage, like divorce or death, were in worse health than those who remained married.

Now what is Divorce?

According to wiki , divorce or dissolution of marriage is the final termination of a marriage, canceling the legal duties and responsibilities of marriage and dissolving the bonds of matrimony between two persons. In most countries, divorce requires the sanction of a judge or other authority in a legal process to complete a divorce.

Divorce laws are different in every state and can be very complex, so when possible you should contact a family law attorney with domestic violence expertise before taking any action to divorce your abusive spouse.

The Chicago University study found divorcees who didn’t remarry suffered the greatest ill-health due to a drop in income, and a rise in stress related to shared child care and possible custody issues.

DIVORCE has a huge impact on your health, even if you remarry, a study found divorced or widowed people have 20 per cent more chronic health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer than married people, and also suffer more mobility problems such as having trouble climbing stairs and walking. Research to be published in the Journal of Health and Social Behaviour reveals that interviews with more than 8000 people found they entered adulthood with a “stock” of health and each time a person divorced or was widowed they lost a chunk, putting them at risk of chronic illness.

Sociologists have studied the effects of marriage for some time, trying to figure out whether it’s beneficial in a variety of ways. They’ve found that marriage appears to boost health, especially among men, said Waite, director of the University of Chicago’s Center on Aging.

People who remarried were somewhat less likely to have these problems than those who had stayed single but still more problems than those who remained married. The research did not confirm that the end of a marriage directly lead to poor health. To definitively confirm a cause and effect, researchers would have to randomly assign people to stay married or stop being married, the research has found that women and men who were recently divorced had weaker immune systems than those who had been divorced longer. “We also found that it mattered if you had chosen the divorce, or if your spouse was the one who asked for it,” said Kiecolt-Glaser, director of health psychology at the Ohio State University College of Medicine. “You are better off being the one who walked rather than the one who was left behind.”
